Buganda Sports

How the Buganda Kingdom turned its sporting legacy into a story worth telling.

Client

Kindgom of Buganda. Ministry of Youth, Sports and the Arts

Year

2024

The Kingdom of Buganda is the largest and most influential traditional kingdom in Uganda, with a history spanning over six centuries.
Sport lies at the heart of its cultural and community life, a tradition dating back to the 1880s, with vibrant water sports, athletics, wrestling, and ball games.

The context

As the Ministry looked to document and celebrate this extraordinary sporting heritage, it recognized a need for a formal publication that would capture the breadth, depth, and cultural significance of Buganda’s sporting activities. Additionally, the Ministry sought a unified visual identity for Buganda Sports, a mark that would represent the Kingdom’s sporting endeavors across all touchpoints.

The challenge

Despite the immense scale and cultural significance of its sporting activities, there was no dedicated platform to tell these stories. The Ministry’s work spanning dozens of sporting disciplines, hundreds of games, and thousands of participants across 18 counties was largely undocumented in a cohesive, accessible format.

The Ministry needed a publication that could capture the sheer breadth of its sporting calendar, from the high-profile Masaza Cup to traditional wrestling (Enkuyo) and badminton, from youth competitions to veterans’ events.

The publication also needed to communicate the Kingdom’s strategic vision for sports.

As the first edition of what would hopefully become a regular publication, it needed to establish a template and standard that would guide future issues.

The approach

The strategy was to:

  1. Honor the Kingdom’s legacy: The Visual elements, typography, and layout choices reflected the Kingdom’s royal heritage while remaining accessible and engaging for modern readers.
  2. Showcase the Full Spectrum of Buganda Sports: The magazine was structured to cover the full breadth of the Ministry’s activities. From the flagship Masaza Cup to the Coronation Golf Tournament, from the Kabaka’s Birthday Run to the Royal Regatta, from traditional wrestling to badminton, the publication provided a comprehensive overview of the Kingdom’s sporting ecosystem
  3. Prioritize photography and visual storytelling, ensuring that the energy, passion, and cultural richness of Buganda’s sporting events were captured in compelling imagery.
  4. Establish a scalable publication template

The work

PLASTRA delivered the first edition of the Buganda Sports Magazine and the official Buganda Sports logo, establishing the visual and editorial foundation for the Ministry’s communications.
